Exercise to help deal with uncertainty
I have been self-quarantined since mid-March and it's starting to wear thin that's for sure! I imagine it's the same for most of us who are lucky enough to not be sick or who have to work on the frontlines.
That being the case, I thought I'd share some things that I find helpful to stay sane and healthy under the circumstances~
First things first: I use the principles I learned in recovery from alcoholism a bunch of years ago but have become a way of life and which I believe are good for anyone. The ideas of living one day at a time, or even one hour at a time and acceptance are keystones.
If you are struggling either mentally or physically, these are the available ideas to embrace and can really bring relief!
What do I mean?
Say you are overwhelmed by thoughts of the unknown future or you find yourself dwelling on things that happened in the past which bring pain when you think of them...the moment you become aware of these thoughts, slow them down and try to "switch tracks" in your current thoughts to what is the NEXT RIGHT THING you CAN do, that you have some control over? What needs tending? Or maybe a friend or family member could use a call? Or maybe you need to talk it out with someone who can listen? Try to bring your mind where your feet are! And keep doing that throughout the day. It works, it really does!
If you're in physical discomfort (not intense pain-that may require medical attention), but if your muscles hurt, or you have a headache, or you feel weak and wish you felt stronger or better, There's a great quote from Arthur Ashe ...."Start where you are. Do what you can. Use what you have."
If you have back pain for instance, lie down on a carpet, rug or mat with your knees bent - hug your knees to your chest and take 4 deep breaths-perhaps rock side to side. Take an epsom salt bath. Or a lovely shower. Easy does it. First things First.
This may not be new information, but if you're like me you need reminders!
I love helping people feel better. If you need some support right now, get in touch and we can discuss! Also, I am offering free sessions to all frontline healthcare workers!
